Biotechnolgy Business Watch
Biotech companies in the established markets of the United States, Canada, Australia and Europe reacted to a cash-constrained 2009 by cuttingresearch and development costs and increasingefficiencies. the industry’s belt-tightening effortshelped to dramatically increase its year-on-yearprofits (see chart).

According to a 27 April review from analysts Ernst and young. the United States saw an impressive upsurge in profitability despite the acquisition of biotech company Genentech by roche, thus removing Genentech’s billions of dollars of profit from the analysts’ statistics. “Much of the cost-cutting in 2009 was precipitated by short-term thinking and the very real need to survive,” the report notes. A greater number of public biotech companies survived the year than industry observers had anticipated: 622 existed in established marketsas of December 2009 compared with 700in 2008, and those that remain have built upgreater reserves of cash this year. but, the report adds, “in seeking short-term survival, some companies may be hurting their long-term prospects”. For example, the industry’s research and development expenditures dropped 21%,from US$28.7 billion in 2008 to $22.6 billionin 2009. Meanwhile, biotech prospects in emerging markets such as China and Indiacontinued to blossom, although the report did not make quantitative comparisons.
Regulating P53 Activity in Cancer Cells

The protein BRD7 activates p53 and could therefore suppress the development of cancerous tumours, reports a study online in Nature Cell Biology this week. The transcription factor p53 is a critically important tumour suppressor protein, as inactivation of the p53 pathway contributes to the development of cancer. BRD7 expression is frequently lost in breast cancer, but it is currently not clear how BRD7 might inhibit tumour formation. Reuven Agami and colleagues show that BRD7 binds to and activates p53. BRD7 also regulates chromatin structure at p53-target genes, enabling more efficient transcription at these sites. As such, BRD7 loss permits oncogenic transformation of cultured human cells.

The researchers analyzed over two hundred human breast cancer samples and found that BRD7 expression was lost only in those tumours that contained functional p53. These findings suggest that selective BRD7 loss in human cancers provides an additional means of silencing the p53 pathway, and provide insight into how p53 transcriptional activity is regulated.

Aditi Technologies Creates its First Ever IP Based Solution for Bioinformatics - Launches DNA PReDuST

Aditi Technologies, a leading provider of software product and application development services, announced its foray into IP led solutions by launching "DNA PReDuST". This solution is deployed on top of Microsoft Biology Foundation (MBF), Microsoft's recent Bioinformatics platform offering, co-engineered by Aditi & Microsoft."DNA PReDuST" or "DNA Parallel Restriction Digestion using Suffix Trees", is an in-silico software solution targeted at scientists involved in Bioinformatics, Genomics and Pharma research to identify appropriate slots in a DNA sequence at which it can be cleaved for in-vitro experiments.

A limited period free download of DNA PReDuST is available at http://www.aditi.com/product_eng_microsoft_solutions_BioTech.aspx. What makes it stand out is the fact that this is the first solution in the market that not only supports all kinds of restriction enzymes (Type I, II and III) but also takes into account real time laboratory conditions (i.e. temperature and pH) while conducting the experiments, thus significantly boosting test accuracy, reducing multiple iterations & cycle time, and resulting in considerable cost savings. It also offers some interesting and intuitive visualizations for DNA's restriction and digestion maps, which are significant productivity accelerators for researchers.

Commenting on this development, Pankaj Jindal, President - Aditi Technologies, said "IP based solutions are exciting and firmly in-line with our vertical alignment strategy. This solution is a testimony of Aditi's Bioinformatics software engineering prowess and deep understanding of industry pain points."Welcoming the move, Simon Mercer, Director of Health and Wellbeing - Microsoft, said "We at Microsoft are happy to see Aditi Technologies taking a lead in extending Microsoft Biology Foundation. This is a step towards unleashing the true potential of this framework and we offer our support and best wishes for the success of this effort."Aditi Technologies is a core member of Microsoft led BioIT Alliance - http://www.bioitalliance.org/ - a cross-industry group working to integrate science and technology to accelerate bioinformatics and pharmaceutical research.

About Aditi Technologies:

Founded in 1994, Aditi pioneered the idea that great software products can be built out of India. Today, Aditi represents the best Microsoft software development capability in the world.
