Recently I read an interesting new release that an innovative oral insulin drug was approved in India. Toronto located Generex's Oral-lyn (http://www.generex.com/ ) became the first non-injectable buccal insulin approved in India. Apparently Oral insulin is delivered to the mouth via buccal membranes and unlike inhaled insulin products, buccally absorbed Oral Insulin does not reach the lungs.

This is an interesting strategy for development stage pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical companies in the US. Getting the product approved in a big country like China or India could help better understand the product performance in real patients much before going to FDA or EMEA who in anyway would take years and tons of data to approve. This strategy might help earn licensing revenue early and to raise funding pipeline. Further it appears there are firms (http://www.nectidindia.com/) who focus exclusively on providing such narrow services. Interesting!!!

Oral insulin should be brought to the market immediately at least in India. As insulin in blood is already a time tested affair and it has proved to be non harmful, releasing oral insulin after brief clinical trails is quite wise. Moreover, in countries like equador it is already being used for at least over a year and serious side effects if any would have surfaced by now. In releasing a new drug in to the market always an elemental risk is involved which obviously cannot be avoided. There may be instances where Even drugs approved by FDA after careful study were withdrawn later due to bad effects. Riddance of human sufferring is most important and undue delays in clinical trials are killing the hopes of patients. Many sufferres of diabetes like me feel that in any case the disease cannot be stopped or its ill effects prevented and therefore taking a risky drug does not really matter!
