CAREER IN THE NEW DECADE

Biomedical Informatics is an academic discipline that bridges medicine and information sciences. With the increasing popularity of IT biomedical informatics is making its presence felt in a big way.


"The role of IT in healthcare has become increasingly necessary for modern practices in medicine, efficient and effective management of healthcare and professional health education. Talking about the program offered by BII, Dr. Sarin says: "The purpose of the program in Biomedical Informatics is to prepare students in the applications of computer and information sciences to support and manage and healthcare activities." These can range from those pertaining to the care of the sick to health promotion and disease prevention, medical and health education, health sciences research and management efforts directed towards solutions of problems in the delivery of health care, including resource optimization and cost-effectiveness.

Those interested in making a career out of a degree in Biomedical Informatics would be delighted to know that its applications are rapidly increasing in healthcare and hospital management systems, laboratory automation, quality assurance, financial management and resource allocation, health services and biomedical research. They can also find placements in clinical decision making, treatment monitoring, networking and registration systems, information storage, retrieval and database management systems, simulation and modeling, pattern recognition, biomedical signal and image processing, and health education, research and support systems.

First-ever French pavilion at MEDICAL FAIR INDIA

For the first time, the French medical equipment industry will be participating in the MEDICAL FAIR INDIA , an international exhibition and conference on diagnostics, medical equipment and technology being held at at Bombay Exhibition Centre, Mumbai from March 12 to 14, 2010.

For participating in this expo, the Ubifrance Pavilion is gathering about 15 companies. DPSARU to organize symposium on 'Advances in Cardiovascular Sciences'

Delhi Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research University (DPSARU) New Delhi, will organize 4th International Symposium on 'Recent Advances in Cardiovascular Sciences' on February 3 & 4 at the G. K N Auditorium in DPSARU.

The emphasis of the symposium will be on topics related to the Cardiovascular Disorders and their management. AIDCOC to conduct series of seminars prior to 61st IPC

The All India Drug Control Officers Confederation (AIDCOC), the congregation of drug control officers in the country, is planning to conduct a series of seminars on building trust in safety and efficacy of medicines in the coming months, as a curtain raiser to the 61st Indian Pharmaceutical Congress (IPC). The AIDCOC is the official organisers of the 61st IPC to be held from December 11 to 13, 2009, at Nirma University of Science and Technology, Ahmedabad.

The plans are to conduct pre-congress seminars at New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai, on the theme of IPC - 'Building trust in safety and efficacy of medicines', to moot on the need of public awareness about the medicines available in the market. The first of the series of seminars will be held at Hotel Taj Coromondal, Chennai on September 13, 2009, along with the 12th annual convention of the confederation, informs Ravi Udayabhaskar, secretary general, AIDCOC.

"This is for the first time in the history of IPC a series of pre-congress event is held in various places to awoke public attention to the drug related matters," he said. "Since the topic is related to consumer, we have designed the seminars to become a bridge between the experts in the industry, regulatory authority and the general public," added Udaybhaskar. The AIDCOC is already indulged in various interactive programmes to disseminate awareness on the drug related issues to the consumer.

In the first seminar, a speech on the theme will be delivered by Raghavendra Rao, managing director, Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Ltd. Dr P V Appaji, executive director, Pharmaceutical Export Promotion Council, will detail on the current scenario and the future prospects of the Indian pharmaceutical industry in the international market and Justice S Nagamuthu, sitting judge, Madras High Court will deliver his views on the Drugs and Cosmetics Act (Amendment) 2008.

Though the first seminar will be only for the representatives from regulatory authority, pharma industry and people related to the sector, the ensuing seminars would have participation from non-governmental organisations related to healthcare industry and consumers. The seminars will help the organisation to bring up the theme as a subject of public interest, which in turn, will invite more public attention to the IPC even as the event has erstwhile attracted only the pharmaceutical and allied industries and the pharma students, comments Udayabhaskar.

The confederation has selected H G Koshia, commissioner, Gujarat Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA) as the chairman of the local organising committee. The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), as in the earlier IPCs, will conduct the pharma exhibition concurrent to the 61st IPC.

National meet on ‘Emerging and Merging Areas of Biology’ from Dec 7 to 9

The Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility Centre of the Department of Biotechnology functioning at the Presidency College in Chennai, along with Indian Society of Life Sciences (ISLS) and Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA), are organizing a National Conference on ‘Emerging and Merging Areas of Biology’ from December 7 to 9 in Chennai.

On account of this, an organizing committee has been formed with Dr G Madhavan Nair, president, ISCA and professor R Ramamurthy, president, ISLS as chief patrons.

The three days scientific programme will comprise of enlightening and innovative symposia and talks by eminent Professors, Scientists and Research scholars in the areas of bio-informatics, Pharmacogenomics, Immuno-biology, Nanobiology, Space biology, Stem cell biology, cancer biology, Integrated Medicine and Biodiversity.

Professor S Rajarajan, head, PG and Research Department of Microbiology in the College, who has been elected as the organizing secretary for the national seminar, said the conference will focus on various emerging and merging areas of biology and life sciences which aims at providing a common platform for interaction and exchange of new knowledge among research scholars, academicians and PG students. He hoped that the deliberations of the conference would help the participants to formulate new research programs and evolve new policy perspectives.

Dept of Pharma to organise international meet on pharma industry in Mumbai in Nov

The Department of Pharmaceuticals, in association with FICCI and other pharma organisations, is organising an international conference on pharmaceuticals in Mumbai on November 30, ahead of the proposed CHI happening from next day, to showcase strength of Indian companies.

A meeting, called by Pharma secretary Ashok Kumar recently, decided to organise the event in a bid to lure the big traders from the developed countries and thereby giving a fillip to the exports from the country by showcasing the strengths of the domestic industry. The meeting was attended by joint secretary Arun Jha, deputy secretary Paresh Johri, representatives from organisations like SPIC, IDMA, BDMA and OPPI, experts from UNIDO, Pharmexcil and CPhI organisers to chalk out the detailed plan for the event.


The event will showcase the strength of Indian companies for meeting global requirement of quality medicines as a vision of 2020. This year event will be novel drugs and drug discovery. The government could consider luring visitors from Vietnam, Korea, CIS countries, South Africa etc. Members who want to suggest the name of prominent members can forward the same to us and all efforts will be made to call those prominent persons at the cost of government, it was
decided.

Pharma associations suggested that conference should also involve segments like medical devices, pharma machinery and excipients industry. Besides, there was also suggestion to extend 50 per cent concession to the small and medium pharma units to take part in the exhibition.

"Focus will be on inviting big traders mostly from Europe who get the major share of WHO tenders to come to India as guests along with the consumer organizations of developing countries and the regulatory authorities of focus countries to come to India to see our commitment to quality drugs at affordable prices by arranging visits to SME sector units all over the country. This is essential to remove the stigma of spurious drugs being originated from India," an official said.

The conference, in general, will emphasise India as a destination of quality generic medicines at affordable prices for all range of customers besides demonstrating the capabilities of the country in the field.

CRI Kasauli to host tenth National conference on IAVI on Nov 23, 24

The Central Research Institute (CRI) at Kasauli will host the tenth National Conference of the Indian Academy of Vaccinology and Immunobiology (IAVI) on November 23 and 24. The two-day conference will be inaugurated by Dr R K Srivasthava, director general of the Directorate of Health Services, India.

More than 200 scientists specialized in the manufacture of vaccines and sera representing private and public sectors will attend the conference. The specialists will discuss the latest in the field of vaccine and immunology, said Dr K R Mani, director of the Central Research Institute, Kasauli.

He said the scientific sessions will include paper presentations and brainstorming sessions covering research and development of New Generation Vaccines, Clinical Trials, Regulatory issues, Pre-clinical Animal studies, Vaccines for the pandemic H1N1 and Indian Pharmacopoeia - new perspectives. It will also highlight the cutting-edge advance in the field of immunobiologicals and feature recent findings from leading vaccinologists, immunobiologists, bio-technologists and academic experts in the form of lectures, exhibitions and mainstreaming sessions.

The conference will be unique in promoting the translational nature of modern biomedical research in vaccinology. Kamla Nehru College convention on pharmaceutical sciences from Nov 22

SIRO to organise workshop on regulatory strategy for European market access on November 19 & 20

SIRO Clinpharm, a global Clinical Research Organization (CRO) with its base in India, US, Europe and Israel, in association with leading regulatory experts from Europe, today announced a workshop on regulatory strategy for European market access. NRDC, Jain University to organize ‘Innovate India 2009’ in Bangalore from Nov 19-20

National Research Development Corporation (NRDC) in association with the Center for Emerging Technologies, Jain University, Bangalore is organizing ‘Innovate India 2009’ event on November 19 to 20, 2009 at J N Tata Auditorium, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.

The two day event will focus on the process of innovation and technology commercialization. It will address some of the critical issues associated with the innovation systems in the country.

The event is a platform to provide interaction and linkages to entrepreneurs, research scientists, technologists, industrialists, policy makers, investors, bureaucrats and evangelists. Analytical Science Congress at Lonavala from Nov 12

With a view to providing a common platform to scientists, technologists, academics and industrialists to meet and discuss the latest trends in the area of analytical chemistry and instrumentation, the Indian Society of Analytical Scientists is organizing the third Indian Analytical Science Congress (IASC-09) during November 12 to13 at Lonavala, near Pune in Maharashtra.

According to the organizers, about 200 scientists are expected to participate in the two-day programme. More than 100 research papers in various fields of analytical chemistry and instrumentation would be presented during the conference.

This conference will provide an avenue for analytical scientists, laboratory managers, instruments developers and manufacturers to discuss and exchange views and information on the latest developments in analytical sciences.

The main objectives of this conference are to discuss and review the latest developments in all areas of analytical sciences and also to promote best practices and efficiency in all areas.

All major areas in analytical sciences will be discussed in IASC III. The scientific programme comprises in the areas of: bioanalytical chemistry; electroanalytical chemistry; thermal analysis; atomic and molecular spectroscopy; mass spectrometry; separation science; sampling and sensor technology; miniaturization technology; environmental analysis; food and drug analysis; aterials analysis.

In addition to these main categories, the scientific committee will accept contributions of papers that are relevant to the field of instrumental methods of analysis in general, describing important new concepts, or providing insights of analytical processes and methods, as well as novel applications to the area of chemical analysis. An extended abstract of the technical paper should be submitted to the convener before September 20. Authors will be notified of acceptance of abstract by October 5, according to a release from the organisers.

SRIPS 3-day annual meet to focus on India’s Clinical Trial Potential

The annual conference of Southern Regional Indian Pharmacological Society (SRIPS), to be held at the PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Coimbatore, from November 12 to 14, will have a three day workshop and conference on "How safely clinical trials can be conducted in India".

The three days program will include a full day workshop and two days conferences, which will be attended by around one thousand people including pharmacologists, researchers, academia and industry captains, said Dr S Ramalingam, principal, PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research.

Besides Tamil Nadu, other states participating would be Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Goa and Pondicherry. The researchers will present their scientific findings in the seminar.The programme, organized by PSG Institute of Medical Science and PSG College of Pharmacy, is aimed at projecting India’s potential in drug discovery with an in-depth focus on emerging clinical trials off-shoring destination. The theme of the Conference is ‘Enquire, Educate and Elevate’.

Dr M Ramanathan, professor and head of Department of Pharmacology, PSG College of Pharmacy, who is the Organizing secretary of the conference, said Dr V P Kamboji, director of Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow will inaugurate the conference. The delegates attending the conference are mainly Pharmacologists having either medical or pharmacy degree. Dr K P Mohan Kumar of Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Kolkata will deliver the 'Dr Lalitha Kameswaran Memorial Oration'. Around 21 eminent speakers in various fields of Pharmacology will speak on.Opportunities of Clinical Trials, Changing trends in Drug Discovery and Research in Drug discovery in India are some of the key topics highlighted for discussions in the seminars. Since the pharmacologists play an important role in clinical trials, a separate session on bioethics in clinical trials is also charted, said Dr Ramanathan.
