Scope and needs of Bioinformatics

The jobs currently available in bioinformatics involve the design and implementation of programs and systems for the storage, management and analysis of vast amounts of DNA sequence data. Such positions require in-depth programming and relational database skills, which very few biologists possess, and so it is largely the computational specialists who are filling these roles. As the bioinformatics field matures there will be a huge demand for outreach to the biological community to sift through gigabases of genomic sequence in search of novel targets. It will be in these areas that biologists with the necessary computational skills will find their niche.

Programming skills in addition to extensive knowledge of molecular biology packages (GCG, BLAST, FASTA etc.), one will need to learn web and programming skills including HTML, Perl, JAVA and C++ and be familiar with a variety of operating systems (especially UNIX and Linux). Relational database skills like SQL and database application such as Sybase or Oracle will be highly advantageous.

Indian Pharmacopoeia

HEALTH minister A Ramdoss has recently unveiled the Indian Pharmacopoeia, the text of formularies of medicines. Many years of strenuous work of Indian pharmacologists has gone into the making of the Pharmacopoeia, which comprises a comprehencive (and continuously revisable) list of pharmaceutical substances and formulas for making medicinal preparations. With this, India has now joined about a dozen countries that have their own Pharmacopoeias. If the country also equips itself with enough modern drug testing facilities and steps up its pharmaco - vigilance systems, that would go a long way in the harminisations of India's drug regulatory standards with the West. This would also help pharmaceutical exporters as they queue up before regulators abroad for the certification of their products. The Centre should fulfil its oft-repeated promise to set up a Central Drug Authority without any further delay.

Bioinformatics "Stream of Biological Science"

Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary research area, which may be defined as the interface between biological and computational sciences. Thus, the people working in this field in most cases either have training in biology or computer science, and they learned about the other field by dealing with problems or using the tools of the other one. Although the term ‘Bioinformatics’ is not really well defined, you could say that this scientific field deals with the computational management of all kinds of biological information, Most of the bioinformatics work that is being done can be described as analyzing biological data.
